Environmental Services Worker II
Responsible for performing routine operation of sanitation trucks, and other equipment, driving established routes to collect and dispose of household and commercial solid waste. An employee in this class operates a variety of solid waste collection equipment. Emphasis of the work is on operating a large vehicle to collect solid waste in the City’s residential and business districts. Work also includes performing one or more tasks normally associated with other manual labor personnel as required. Work occurs in all weather conditions and includes working holidays and possibly working overtime Work is performed under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor and is evaluated based on attaining performance objectives, safe operation of equipment, and completion of assigned route.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Drives a variety of solid waste, recycling and brush trucks to collect solid waste, recycling, brush and down trees and aid in the removal of dead animals; aid in the repair and delivery of solid waste containers; and drives and operates snowplows to remove snow and ice from city streets and parking areas.
- Empties refuse and recycle containers riding or walking behind trucks; operates chainsaw to cut trees.
- Assists with completion of work orders; maintains trucks; performs various yard work.
- Communicates with the general public to provide educational information regarding the city's refuse programs.
- Identifies and reports route, equipment and safety issues.
- Enter route and trip data into computerized program.
- Conducts pre-trip inspection of truck; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; and cleans equipment.
- Transports load to prescribed disposal areas.
- Pressure washes Main St. trash cans; and pressure washes, disinfects and repairs old cans from customers that have moved or want a different size can.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalency; and one (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment such as a sanitation truck or dump truck; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications:
Requirements exist at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
- Possession of a valid Class B CDL to operate a motor vehicle.
- Collection Training (Blue Ridge Services) within 12 months of hire
- Flagger training within 12 months of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of practices of operating large specialty trucks and other equipment.
- Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of the geographical layout of the City including streets and other arterials.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied assigned equipment.
- Skills in the operation of equipment to which assigned.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to explain policies and procedures to citizens and businesses.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to respond back to work for emergencies or in support of other personnel as required.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work in this classification is defined as heavy work requiring the physical exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, handling and repetitive motions. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment and visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and to operate a computer terminal. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection of products, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold. Employees are subject to the noise which may require the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employees are subject to vibration such as oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body when working with equipment. Employees are subject to hazards including exposure to mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and oils and potential for biological or human waste. Employees are exposed to moving or parked vehicles, stray or loose animals, insects, broken glass and metal, and other conditions associated with solid waste collections.
