Garbage, Recycling and Brush Changes Start July 1

The Public Works Department is making some updates to garbage, recycling and brush services starting on July 1, 2025.

Monthly Collection Rates: 

New environmental services fees have been set according to the table below. The changes will be effective July 1, 2025. This rate increase covers the hiring of three additional environmental services workers, medical insurance premium increases for division staff, and tipping fee inflation.

Brush Collection – Updated Schedule and Minimum Collection Requirements 

As we look for ways to keep costs manageable and improve the efficiency of our operations, we will be making some changes to our complimentary brush collection service. 

  • Collection Schedule: Starting in July, brush collection will be moving to a biweekly schedule. Brush and yard waste will be collected every other week. 
    • Week of July 7 – No brush collection 
    • Week of July 14 – Brush collection running 
    • Week of July 21 – No brush collection 
    • Week of July 28 – Brush collection running 
  • Minimum Brush Collection Requirements: To help crews operate efficiently, brush and yard waste will only be collected if it meets the minimum required volume: 
    • At least 1 full kraft paper yard waste bag (30-gallon bag) or 
    • A brush pile equivalent in size to 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 2 ft. 
  • Yard waste less than full kraft bag (or equivalent size) will not be collected until the size reaches or exceeds 1 full bag or a 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 2 ft. pile.  
  • Public Works will offer residents up to ten free kraft bags per year per household. Starting on July 1st, residents can visit the City Operations Center at 305 Williams Street on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM to pick up their bags. Call 828.697.3084 when you reach the door and Public Works staff will assist you. The office will be closed on July 4th. 

Compost Bin Program 

The City of Hendersonville offers compost bins at a discounted price for residents. 65-gallon compost bins can be purchased at for $69.00. Instructions are posted on the website for scheduling pick-up. Order your compost bin.

On the Horizon 

Later in the year, the Public Works Department will be completing some additional efficiency measures to improve collection efficiency. This will include a cart audit and looking at improvements to current routes. Customer notifications will be sent with updates as they are available. 

As a reminder, the City of Hendersonville will be closed for the Independence Day holiday on Friday, July 4, 2025. There will be no garbage, recycling, or brush collection on the holiday. Garbage and recycling for Friday customers will take place on Friday, July 11, and their brush collection will resume on Friday, July 18.
