Yard Waste
Starting July 1, 2025:
As we look for ways to keep costs manageable and improve the efficiency of our operations, we will be making some changes to our complimentary brush collection service.
- Collection Schedule: Starting in July, brush collection will be moving to a biweekly schedule. Brush and yard waste will be collected every other week.
- Week of July 7 – No brush collection
- Week of July 14 – Brush collection running
- Week of July 21 – No brush collection
- Week of July 28 – Brush collection running
- And so on...
- Minimum Brush Collection Requirements: To help crews operate efficiently, brush and yard waste will only be collected if it meets the minimum required volume:
- At least 1 full kraft paper yard waste bag (30-gallon bag) or
- A brush pile equivalent in size to 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 2 ft.
- Yard waste less than full kraft bag (or equivalent size) will not be collected until the size reaches or exceeds 1 full bag or a 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 2 ft. pile.
- Public Works will offer residents up to ten free kraft bags per year per household. Starting on July 1st, residents can visit the City Operations Center at 305 Williams Street on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM to pick up their bags. Call 828.697.3084 when you reach the door and Public Works staff will assist you. The office will be closed on July 4th.
City of Hendersonville residents are provided with yard waste collection service on a biweekly basis.
If anyone (resident, business, or nonprofit) uses a contractor or landscape contractor to trim or cut trees or any yard work, that contractor is responsible for removal of the debris that they generate (including grass clippings, bulk leaves, tree trimmings, etc.).
- Yard waste - i.e. brush, limbs, leaves and grass clippings can be placed in kraft paper yard waste bags or piled curbside, but not within the street or on the sidewalk.
- Do not place stumps, root balls, rocks, logs longer than 8' and 18" in diameter in the piles.
- Minimum Brush Collection Requirements: To help crews operate efficiently, brush and yard waste will only be collected if it meets the minimum required volume:
- At least 1 full kraft paper yard waste bag (30-gallon bag) or
- A brush pile equivalent in size to 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 2 ft.
- Maximum Brush Collection: Two cubic yards per collection week. These items must be piled together in a single concise pile not to exceed 4' x 4' x 12'.
- Keep kraft bags and yard waste piles 3 ft. away from vehicles, utility poles, fences or other structures.
- Bulk leaf collection - Bulk leaf collection service is offered in the spring and fall. The spring season starts at the beginning of March and runs through the end of the month. The fall season typically starts in October and ends in December.
- During bulk leaf collection season loose leaves must be piled at the curbside, not in the street or on the sidewalk, for collection. During bulk leaf season, all leaves must be free of tree limbs, rocks, bottles or other objects that may damage collection equipment.
- The leaf material will be hauled to our yard waste facility and ground into mulch.
- It is not necessary to call the Public Works Department. Removal crews routinely check each City street for piles of leaves.
