Caroline Gunther Named 2024 North Carolina Main Street Champion

Caroline Gunther, owner of Wag! A Unique Pet Boutique has been honored as a 2024 North Carolina Main Street Champion by the N.C. Department of Commerce and the N.C. Main Street & Rural Planning Center for her enduring leadership and transformative impact on Downtown Hendersonville.

Gunther was recognized during a special ceremony held on March 13 in Mooresville as part of the annual North Carolina Main Street Conference, the nation’s largest statewide downtown revitalization gathering. She is one of 47 individuals and organizations across the state to receive the prestigious honor this year, bringing the total number of Main Street Champions recognized since 2000 to 962.

“Main Street Champions are dynamic leaders who drive progress within their communities,” said N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. “These visionary individuals identify opportunities for growth and development that transform the fabric of local economies and neighborhoods.”

“For nearly two decades, Caroline has been a steadfast champion for Downtown Hendersonville,” said Jamie Carpenter, Downtown Manager for the City of Hendersonville. “Her leadership, vision, and dedication have helped shape a vibrant, resilient downtown community.”

As chair of the Downtown Advisory Board and its committees, Gunther has led efforts on major initiatives including an $8.5 million parking investment, the launch of the Hendersonville Farmers Market, a $3.5 million Seventh Avenue streetscape project, and numerous policy updates designed to enhance the district’s vitality.

Known for her fearless advocacy and strategic mindset, Gunther speaks candidly on key issues, listens thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, and drives collaborative solutions that support long-term community growth.

In addition to her civic contributions, Gunther is the owner of Wag! A Unique Pet Boutique, a beloved Main Street business recognized for its exceptional customer service, curated products, and entrepreneurial spirit. As she approaches 15 years as a downtown business owner in 2025, her commitment to Hendersonville continues to inspire.

A second recognition took place on May 1 at Hendersonville City Council where Gunther spoke toward her personal attachment to Hendersonville.  “Place Attachment is the emotional bond and sense of belonging that individuals feel towards a particular location,” Gunther explained her love for Hendersonville “It is like you cry over it, it is deep seeded in your gut and your heart, and the joy of that is something I wish everyone could have.” Continuing on to recognize the people in the community that help make Hendersonville so special.

The North Carolina Main Street program, now in its 45th year, continues to strengthen communities across the state using the time-tested Main Street America approach to downtown revitalization.
