Brooklyn Creek Restoration in Sullivan Park Named 2025 Stormwater Project of the Year by NC APWA Stormwater Division

The City of Hendersonville is proud to announce that the Brooklyn Creek Restoration Project at Sullivan Park has been awarded the 2025 Stormwater Project of the Year by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Stormwater Division.
This recognition highlights the City’s commitment to improving water quality, reducing flood risks, and restoring natural stream functions within an important community park. The Brooklyn Creek project combined ecological restoration with community benefit by enhancing Sullivan Park, increasing habitat diversity, and providing long-term stormwater management improvements.
“The Brooklyn Creek Restoration Project represents the best of what we strive to achieve—projects that reduce flood risk, improve water quality, and create lasting community value,” said Michael Huffman, Stormwater Director for the City of Hendersonville. “This award is a testament to the strong partnerships and dedication that made this restoration possible.”
The success of the project was made possible through the collaboration of NC DEQ 319 Program, NCDEQ Water Resource Development Program, Baker Grading, RiverLink, and Jennings Environmental. Their technical expertise, financial support, and commitment to sustainability played a critical role in achieving this recognition.
The City extends its gratitude to residents, community partners, and local organizations who supported the project and helped bring new life to Brooklyn Creek and Sullivan Park.
