The Clear Creek Greenway Project: Connecting Our Community
The Clear Creek Greenway is an exciting upcoming addition to the Hendersonville greenway system, designed to safely connect our eastern neighborhoods to the heart of the city.
By overcoming major physical barriers like I-26, Mud Creek, and Allen Branch, this nearly 2-mile paved multi-use path will create a safe, accessible, and beautiful route for walking, running, and cycling.
Key Benefits of the Project
- Connecting Communities: Seamlessly links eastern residential areas to the existing city-wide greenway network.
- Direct Access: Provides a safe walking and biking route to local businesses at Highlands Square Drive and the Post Office.
- Centrally Located: Serves as a backyard recreational and commuting resource for more than 1,000 local residences.
- Safer Travel: Creates dedicated pedestrian and cyclist crossings over major highways and waterways, improving pedestrian safety.
Current Project Status & Progress
Large infrastructure projects require careful planning and coordination. The city secured three major grants to fund this project, including federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funds, which covered more than 75% of the total cost.
We appreciate the incredible support throughout that our community has shown throughout this process! Beginning from the public meetings early on, the letters of support which bolstered our grant applications, and the generous donations from local organizations totaling around $400,000.
Thanks to this teamwork and diligent coordination with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), we have reached major milestones:
- Design & Permitting Complete: The rigorous engineering and environmental permitting phases are officially finished.
- Construction Underway: Crews broke ground and heavy construction officially began this past Spring!
Construction Timeline & Phasing
To get sections of the trail open to the public as quickly as possible, the project is being built in phases:
- Phase 1 (West of I-26): Construction on the western portion of the greenway is moving fast and is scheduled for completion in late Fall.
- Phase 2 (The Remainder): Work on the remaining sections of the trail will continue through the winter, with final project completion expected in the Spring of 2027.
